United Nations General Assembly in New York

From tomorrow until Thursday, I will be at the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York. European Council President van Rompuy. We are going to have quite a number of bilateral meetings, for instance with the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-Moon. High Representative Cathy Ashton is already in New York representing the European Union in the assembly. Commissioner Heedegard is also there already as she attended the UN Global Sustainability Panel over the last two days. Commissioners Piebalgs and Dalli have also participated in a number of meetings yesterday and today. Commissioner Georgieva is also with us, and will stay until the end of the week when she attends the Mini-Summit on Humanitarian Response to the Horn of Africa.

On Thursday, I will speak on behalf of the European Union on nuclear safety. I will blog the speech here if I find time but probably this will only be after my return as the coming three days promise to be very busy.

Tomorrow is also the weekly meeting of the European Commission that I will not be able to attend. As quite some Commissioners will be with me in New York the next days, Vice-President Reding will chair the the meeting in smaller formation of two thirds of the College tomorrow. The main topics for discussion will be the situation in Ukraine and economic policies.
